The KwK 43 armed the Tiger II heavy tank, which was one of the armoured fighting vehicles most feared by the Allied armies in World War II. Introduced in 1948, the 20-pdr gun was derived ultimately from the German KwK 43 tank gun of World War II, a development of the 88-mm (3.465-in) Flak anti-aircraft and PaK anti-tank guns of the same period. This was sufficient to penetrate 156 mm (9.14 in) of armour at a range of 2,000 yards (1830 m), or 243 mm (9.57 in) of armour at the same range when firing the alternative armour-piercing discarding sabot (APDS) Mk 1 projectile at a muzzle velocity of 4,692 ft (1430 m) per second. This was a 3.3-in (83.8-mm) weapon with bore length of about 64 calibres, and fired a 20-lb (9.07-kg) armour-piercing capped ballistic cap (APCBC) projectile at a muzzle velocity of 3,346 ft (1020 m) per second.
